Return to Impasto

Ever since using impasto paints in my Year 12 painting, I have loved them. But somehow, I never used them again. I even forgot what they were called and spent years thinking they were gouache.

Now, nearly 30 years later, as I rediscover my love for art, I realised it was impasto I had been missing.

After experimenting with Monero oil brushes, I came across Haze Long’s watercolour set, which led me to her impasto brushes. The next day, an email landed in my inbox about her new set and I had to have them.

As soon as I got home, I downloaded the set and started experimenting. I had no idea what I was doing, so I reverse engineered one of her tutorial files. Rookie mistake, I painted directly on the outline layer. But instead of scrapping it, I kept going.

This was the result of 30 minutes of playing around. It is rough but I am embracing the process and pushing beyond my usual need for everything to be clean and polished.

Now I am on a mission to find a course, build a foundation, and carve out a clearer path for my art journey.
