Crystal Clear Winter Waves
There’s something magical about a Gold Coast winter morning. The air is crisp, the light has that beautiful clear quality, and often, the water is super transparent. Recently, I had one of those classic Gold Coast winter days at Broadbeach – cold, crystal-clear, and some small but perfect waves.
Even when the swell is small, and the waves are on the smaller side, bodysurfers can often find some fun waves. These were exactly those kinds of waves: not big, but perfect, barrelling , and with that amazing clarity where you can almost see the sand rushing beneath you.
I had my GoPro mounted on my Handy Bodysurfing handplane for this session, hoping to capture a bit of that unique bodysurfer’s POV. So, if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be on a small, glassy wave, this footage aims to share a little piece of that experience.
The handplane helps with getting a bit of extra lift and speed, which is great on these smaller days, allowing for longer rides and making it easier to get into those little barrels. And with the GoPro on board, it offers a pretty immersive view of the ride.
It’s moments like these – the simple joy of connecting with the ocean, the early morning winter light, and the fun of sliding across a clean little wave – that really highlights what bodysurfing is all about for me.
It doesn’t always have to be big and pumping to be a memorable session.
So come along for a ride; I’ve put together a short video of this crystal-clear winter morning at Broadbeach. It’s a great reminder that there’s always fun to be found if you’re keen to look.
