I chose to use the Canon 80D picture style settings for this shoot, opting for the inbuilt monochrome style with a red filter.
I hadn’t used a camera’s inbuilt picture style for years, and I thought it would be fun to dial in the settings and shoot exclusively in that style throughout the weekend.
The only variation during the shoot was using a polariser filter, which I removed for indoor shots.
My goal was to chase light and texture in my travels over the three days.
See the video of the shoot below to see how I got the shot and the settings I used.
When I first started planning my black and white photography, I couldn’t decide what direction to take because there were so many options.
My favorite black and white photography style has always been shooting on film, especially Kodak Tri-X 400. But that wasn’t an option this time.
Another go-to is using the Mastin Labs Ilford preset stack in Lightroom, but I wanted to try something different.
That’s when the idea of revisiting the Canon 80D’s monochrome picture style came to mind. It felt like a fun experiment to try.
In the end, I was stoked with the shots.
Beyond just the images, the process helped me notice photo opportunities I had overlooked for a long time.
This shoot truly reignited my creativity and made me want to seek out more moments like this. It felt like my photographic eye was opening up again.
Over the weekend, I shot 495 photos.
There were plenty to choose from, but these are the 20 I liked the most and wanted to share.
All shots were taken using the Canon 80D picture style settings. Watch the video to see why I chose these shots.
