Fake it Till Ya Make It

Embracing the messy middle of learning digital art, one quick experiment at a time.

I’ll be honest, I’m still very much feeling my way around when it comes to developing a distinct “style,” or even figuring out if defining one right now truly matters. I’ve been doing a bit of reading, and the whole collage art approach, with its roots in the Dada movement, has definitely caught my eye. There’s something about its rebellious, anything-goes spirit that resonates. My current thinking is to just keep exploring different art movements and techniques, experiment with what feels interesting, and see how (or if) a personal style naturally starts to bubble to the surface.

Right now, it genuinely feels like I’m standing at the starting line of something new. I’m taking those small, tentative steps forward, but if you asked me for a detailed map of where I’m headed, I wouldn’t have one to show you. It’s more like navigating by feel at the moment.

One part of me thinks I should try to create a more structured plan, a kind of artistic roadmap, to plot out where I want to go and what I want to learn. But then another part wonders, shouldn’t I just keep playing, keep experimenting, and let my style find me?

So, for now, my working philosophy is pretty simple, and the title of this post sums it up: I’ll just fake it till I make it. And by “fake it,” I don’t mean being inauthentic. For me, it’s about giving myself permission to try things, to create even when I don’t feel entirely confident or skilled, and to trust that the “making it” part will come through the consistent act of doing and learning. It’s about pushing past that initial self-doubt and just having a go.

This piece, created in 20 minutes of flow, might not win any awards, but it’s another step on the path. And right now, that’s what matters most to me.
