NFI

My very first, slightly confusing, adventure into abstract digital art.

Well, I’m pretty sure this is it – my first proper, intentional crack at creating abstract art. For all the years I’ve considered myself a creative person, dabbling in various things, abstract has always been this a bit of an unknown territory I’ve never really ventured into… at least, not consciously. I can’t recall ever really giving it a proper go.

So, the other day, I stumbled across a tutorial on YouTube – something like “How to make abstract digital art on the iPad – Procreate Techniques” – and thought, “Alright, why not?” I decided to follow along. The tutorial suggested a more pastel palette, but I found myself drawn to using really bright, vibrant colours instead. Just felt like it at the time. And the image you see here? That was the end result of the experiment.

Now, if you were to ask me what it is, or what it means, my honest answer would be: NFI. No idea whatsoever. And to be perfectly frank, I’m still on the fence about whether I even like it. It doesn’t particularly stir any deep emotions in me when I look at it. However, the YouTube creator did mention that this style of abstract art can often look quite effective if printed as part of a series, so there’s that thought to consider…

Maybe the digital nature of it is part of my hesitation. I can’t help but wonder if it had real, physical texture – layers you could touch – perhaps it would give off more of a distinct ‘vibe’ or feeling. Or maybe it just is what it is.

I don’t know… and perhaps, for a first attempt into a whole new world of art, “I don’t know” is a perfectly okay place to be. It’s a starting point, after all…
